Our Story

Women’s sport is underestimated. By media. By brands. Even by their own sport bodies. Women’s sport receives just 0.4% of media coverage and 4% of total sponsorship is often an after-thought.

The thing is, women’s sport has the power to connect with and captivate people.

The moment USA soccer star, Brandi Chastain dropped to the ground and pulled her top off after kicking the winning penalty at the 1999 FIFA Women’s World has been etched in my mind for the past 20 years and set the path for my sporting and professional career.

Two decades later it was pink haired, striker and FIFA World Cup best player, Megan Rapinoe who got tongues wagging with her goals and wide-arm celebration pose in front of 1billion viewers.

Rebecca Sowden Team Heroine Founder Women's Sport

Rebecca Sowden is a former New Zealand Football Fern, USA division one college soccer player, World Best XI recipient being recognised as one the top eleven people in the world to progress women’s football in 2023 (alongside Heroines including Sam Kerr, Spanish Women’s Football Team) and Founding Partner of global and Cannes Lion Glass, 3 x Gold Lions Award Winning Campaign, Correct the Internet which highlighted and corrected bias against sportswomen on the internet.

Bex has spent 17 years running the sponsorship and marketing for some of the world’s leading sport and entertainment properties including Hong Kong Rugby Sevens, Volvo Ocean Race, FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, Masterchef and Idol as well as starting her own sport’s technology start-up and national beach soccer series.

She started Team Heroine as she felt brands and right’s holders were missing opportunities to create and captivate fans, be it due to a lack of women’s sport specific know how, limited resource or simply underestimating the power of women’s sport. Many organisations are simply rolling out the same marketing and sponsorship campaigns that they would for men’s sport, treating them as an after-thought or not maximising impact.

She believes bold thinking, brave ideas and a big attitude is needed to fast-track progress and fully unleash the power of women’s sport to captivate the world.
